Kraken, a leading crypto exchange, has partnered with Backed Finance and the Solana Foundation to launch xStocks, enabling the tokenization of over 50 U.S. equities and ETFs. The project, led by Kraken’s co-CEO Arjun Sethi, aims at expanding the tokenization initiative globally, targeting Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
Arjun Sethi, co-CEO of Kraken, noted, “Kraken is pursuing a more regulatory-engaged rollout.”
Backed Finance delivers the custodial and asset management infrastructure, facilitating xStocks issuance. The Solana Foundation provides the blockchain infrastructure, ensuring fast settlement and scalability. xStocks are unavailable in the U.S., with Kraken actively engaging with regulators for compliance in the jurisdictions they operate.
Kraken’s new venture with Backed Finance and Solana is expected to drive Solana’s usage metrics and potential DeFi integrations. By offering 24/7 trading and reduced fees, these tokens can substantially increase trading volume and liquidity on Solana-based protocols.
This development reflects a strategic shift towards tokenizing real-world assets. Prior attempts like Binance’s tokenized stock offering faced regulatory halts, contrasting Kraken’s more compliant rollout. Similar projects contributed to the tokenization market’s rise, valued at $65 billion in May 2025.
The new xStocks initiative can boost interest in governance and DeFi tokens within the Solana ecosystem. Enhanced regulatory frameworks and technological infrastructure could further promote cross-chain and multi-platform expansion, signaling greater adoption of blockchain across real-world financial assets.
