Kaspersky Discovers SparkKitty Malware Targeting Crypto Users

Kaspersky has identified the SparkKitty malware, targeting iOS and Android devices via cryptocurrency apps in Southeast Asia and China.

The SparkKitty malware presents a profound risk due to its ability to steal crypto wallet recovery phrases. Experts warn of potential thefts in regions where the malware proliferates, affecting individual users directly.

Kaspersky’s cybersecurity team discovered the SparkKitty malware, which targets smartphones via apps related to crypto and gambling. Embedded in apps on App Store and Google Play, it steals seed phrase screenshots. “Kaspersky has notified Google and Apple about the malicious apps,” according to the Kaspersky Cybersecurity Research Team.

The malware primarily targets users in Southeast Asia and China. It affects devices with cryptocurrency apps, posing a severe threat to Bitcoin and Ethereum wallet holders. Applications like “币coin” and “SOEX” had over 10,000 downloads before app store removals.

The immediate impact includes compromised individual user wallets, threatening crypto assets due to seed phrase theft. While no substantial market shifts have been directly linked, users face risks of opportunistic asset theft.

Experts emphasize that cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin and Ethereum, whose wallet apps were used on compromised devices face vulnerability. The ongoing threat underlines the need for heightened personal cybersecurity measures amid rising malware sophistication.
