Public BTC Firms Trade Below Acquisition Costs

Half of new public Bitcoin treasury companies are currently trading over 50% below their acquisition cost basis, according to data from Bitbo.io.

Concerns Over Strategic Viability

The trading losses of these firms raise concerns about the sustainability of corporate Bitcoin strategies and the potential reevaluation of such approaches in fluctuating markets.

  • More than half of newly reporting public BTC treasury companies, including MicroStrategy and several mining operators, are trading at a considerable discount relative to their acquisition costs. This reflects significant market challenges faced by firms utilizing Bitcoin as a treasury asset.

Michael Saylor, Executive Chairman of MicroStrategy, continues to defend the use of Bitcoin as a store of value despite market volatility. Other companies like Marathon Digital Holdings and Riot Platforms have used convertible debt to bolster their treasuries.

The public equities of these firms are experiencing mark-to-market impairments, heightening risk as Bitcoin prices affect their balance sheets. This financial distress is exacerbated by the recently adopted fair value accounting standards.

“Bitcoin is hope. Bitcoin is property. Companies with strong conviction will hold through volatility.” — Michael Saylor, Executive Chairman, MicroStrategy

Company strategies are being impacted by the recognition of unrealized gains and losses, now included in quarterly earnings reports. Historical precedents, such as MicroStrategy’s 2020-2024 cycle, serve as a warning for potential drawdowns during prolonged bearish trends.

Industry experts speculate on the long-term impact of current market conditions, citing economic shifts and regulatory challenges. The adaptation to fair value accounting rules highlights the volatile nature of integrating Bitcoin into corporate finance strategies.
